S8 Ep12 “Devastation Unleashed: The Galveston Hurricane of 1900”
By the end of the 19th century, the city of Galveston, located on a barrier island off the southeast coast of Texas, had become a thriving commercial center and one of the busiest ports in the United States.
Sadly, that all changed on September 8th 1900, when a catastrophic hurricane roared into Galveston from the Gulf of Mexico with heavy rain, powerful winds and a deadly storm surge. The storm resulted in the deaths of between six and eight thousand people and the destruction of thousands of homes and businesses.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with J.R. Shaw, the creator of “Galveston Unscripted: Podcast and Audio Tour”. J.R., a native of Galveston, has a passion for researching and sharing history and will be taking us back to that fateful time in September of 1900 to give us a glimpse into what is still known as the deadliest natural disaster in the history of the United States.
